What is the pass rate for TIE exams?
There is no percentage score or pass mark for TIE exams. Candidates are assessed according to the CEFR descriptors and are awarded a grade (and corresponding certification) based on their performance.

How is the final score for each part of the exam calculated?
The final score for each part of the exam (Oral/Written Exam) is calculated as the average of 6 different scores, which correspond to the 6 assessment criteria used by TIE.

What is the role of the ‘+’ in the score?
The ‘+’ scores (e.g. B2+, C1+) are the intermediate levels between the basic language proficiency levels. In terms of the result, the ‘+’ grades help the candidate achieve the desired result, as the half-level difference (‘+’) between the grades is automatically rounded up in favor of the candidate.

Example of Spoken TIE Grade

  • Aural reception: C1
  • Interaction: C1
  • Communicative Effectiveness: B2+
  • Grammatical Accuracy: B2+
  • Lexical range: B2+
  • Phonological Control: C1
  • Overall Oral Grade: C1

How is the final certification level awarded calculated?

The final certification level awarded to the candidate is calculated by combining the scores from the Spoken and Written Exams. Here are 4 examples of final certification:

Example 1: Same level of Spoken and Written Exam scores.

  • Spoken: C2
  • Written: C2
  • Certification Level: C2

Example 2: A half-level difference (+) between the Written and Spoken Exam scores is rounded up to the higher level.

  • Spoken: C1+
  • Written: C2
  • Certification Level: C2

Example 3: A difference of more than one level between the Written and Spoken Exam scores is rounded up to the intermediate level, provided that the candidate demonstrated abilities at that level in one of the two parts of the examination.

  • Spoken: C2
  • Written: B2+ (the candidate is at level B2 but demonstrated abilities/knowledge of the next level, i.e. C1)
  • Certification Level: C1

Example 4: A difference of more than one level between the Written and Spoken Exam scores leads to certification of the lower level achieved by the candidate in one of the two parts of the exam, provided that they did not demonstrate the skills of the immediately higher intermediate level.

  • Spoken: C2
  • Written: B2 (the candidate is at level B2 but did not demonstrate the skills/knowledge of the next level, i.e. C1)
  • Certification Level: B2

The table below shows all possible final certification levels according to all possible combinations of scores in the two parts of the exam.

For levels B2-C2

Fail: Candidates receive a FAIL result only if they fail to achieve B1 in one or more criteria of the written/oral part of the exam, regardless of their score in the other criteria.
*Example: if the candidate writes a text that does not answer the question of the topic (“off topic”), then they will receive a FAIL in the Visual Reception and Task Achievement criteria, meaning that their final grade will be FAIL.

DNF (Did Not Fulfill Requirements)

Spoken Exam:

  1. The candidate did not submit a logbook with all the necessary tasks (Investigation/Book/News Story).
  2. The candidate presented a news story that was more than 12 months old.

Written Exam:

  1. The candidate did not attempt to answer one or both of the questions in the written examination.
  2. The candidate’s answer to one or both of the written exam questions was less than 100 words.

For levels A1-B1

Fail: The candidate scored below A1 in one or more criteria of the written/oral part of the exam, regardless of their score in the other criteria.

*Example: if the candidate produces a text that does not answer the question of the topic (“off topic”), they will receive a FAIL in the Visual Reception and Task Achievement criteria, so their final grade will be FAIL.

DNF (Did Not Fulfill Requirements)

  1. Spoken: The candidate did not present a logbook with all the necessary tasks (Investigation/Book).
  2. Written: The candidate did not attempt to answer the written question, either in WT1 (prepared) or WT2 (spontaneous) or both.
  3. Written: The candidate’s written response to WT2 (spontaneous) contained fewer than 40 words.

For levels B2-C2: Candidates receive a certificate if their performance is at least at level B1. If their language proficiency is assessed as lower than B1, they do not receive a certificate.
For levels A1-B1: Candidates receive a certificate if their performance is at least at level A1. If their language proficiency is assessed as lower than A1, they do not receive a certificate.

The TIE Exams

What is a “Logbook”?

The Logbook is the TIE candidate’s file, which contains all the preparation material for the exam (i.e., the Investigation, News Story, Book), which the candidate must have with them on the day of the exam.

Is the Logbook mandatory?

The Logbook is mandatory for both parts of the exam (Oral and Written Exam). Candidates who do not have their Logbook with them on the day of the exam will automatically receive a DNF (Did Not Fulfil the Requirements).

Is the Logbook graded during the exam?

NO. The Logbook is not graded in terms of the structure and accuracy of the information it contains.

Is the Logbook allowed to contain anything else?

The Logbook is only allowed to contain the Investigation, News Story & Book. The Logbook is checked at each part of the exam to ensure that it contains only the permitted materials and that it does NOT contain any other notes, reports, etc. If the Logbook contains anything other than the 3 tasks, the non-permitted materials will be removed by the Examiner. If the additional non-permitted materials cannot be removed, the examiner will be forced to confiscate the entire Logbook until the end of the exam.

Can the candidate use a News Story / read a book / do an Investigation on the same or a similar topic?

NO. The three activities should be based on different topics to avoid possible repetition of information.

Should the candidate be prepared to introduce themselves?

YES. Candidates should be able to answer personal questions. At higher levels, the examiner may also ask candidates to ask each other one or more personal questions.

Does the examiner ask candidates questions?

YES. Before the main part of the oral exam, the examiner asks candidates a few personal questions about their lives, hobbies, studies, work, etc.

Should candidates pay attention while their fellow candidates are presenting their investigations?

YES. The Oral Examination is based on interaction, so candidates should listen carefully to their fellow candidates as they will be asked to ask questions and/or comment on their fellow candidate’s Investigation presentation.

Can an entire class prepare an Investigation on the same topic?

NO, teachers should not allow the entire class to prepare an Investigation on the same topic. Students should be encouraged to choose different research topics.

What kind of books are allowed?

Any type of book is allowed, including novels, comics, non-fiction, or graded readers, as long as it has a basic plot and several characters (e.g., novels, novellas, etc.). Anthologies and other collections of stories are also allowed, but candidates should choose and focus on only one of them. English language textbooks (coursebooks), magazines, and newspapers are NOT allowed.

Are non-English books allowed?

NO. Only books in English are allowed. Candidates who have prepared using non-English books will automatically receive a DNF (Did Not Fulfill the requirements).

Should candidates choose a book that is appropriate for the level they are aiming for?

The level of difficulty of the book is not assessed in the exam. Therefore, candidates are free to choose any book they wish. However, they need to be sure that the content of their book will allow them to demonstrate the skills required for the level they are aiming for. For this reason, it is recommended that they choose a book that is either at the level they are aiming for or one level below.

Can an entire class read the same book?

NO. Teachers should not allow the entire class to use the same book. Students should be encouraged to choose different books.

Should candidates pay attention while their fellow candidates are presenting their books?

YES. The Spoken Exam is based on interaction, so candidates should listen carefully to their fellow candidates as they will be asked to ask questions and/or comment on their fellow candidate’s book presentation.

Can the news story be from the Internet?

YES

How should a candidate choose their news story?

Candidates can choose any news story they wish, provided that it is no more than 12 months old from the date of the exam.

Should candidates pay attention while their fellow candidates are presenting their News Story?

YES. The spoken exam is based on interaction, so candidates should listen carefully to their fellow candidates as they will be asked to ask questions and/or comment on their fellow candidate’s News Story presentation.

Can candidates use a dictionary during the Written Exam?

YES. The use of a monolingual (English-English) dictionary is permitted (*not permitted in the TIE online exam).

Are candidates allowed to access their preparation material (Logbook) during the Written Exam?

YES
