TIE Β2-C2 Examination Procedure

TIE Β2-C2 Exam

The TIE B2-C2 Exam is available in 2 versions:

1) TIE paper-based Exam (on site)
2) TIE online Exam (remote)

The TIE B2-C2 Exam consists of 2 parts:

1) Spoken TIE Exam (OTIE)
2) Written TIE Exam (WTIE)

The 2 parts of the exam are compulsory.

Candidate Preparation

For the TIE B2-C2 Exam, candidates should carry out the following preparation:

STEP 1: Preparation of 3 Prepared Tasks

  1. Investigation: The candidate conducts a short research on a topic of his/her choice.
  2. Book: The candidate reads a book of his/her choice (in English) and produces its summary.
  3. News Story: The candidate finds a true news story (in English) from a source and produces its summary.

STEP 2: Creating the Logbook

The Logbook is the candidate’s archive, which contains all the preparation material for the exam (i.e., Investigation, News Story, Book), which the candidate must carry with him/her on the day of the exam (see sample Logbooks here).

To create the Logbook, the candidate must use the Logbook Template as follows:

  • To record the above 3 Prepared Tasks and

  • For each task, to provide his/her answers to 3 questions.

The candidate has completed his/her Logbook and can take the TIE – Test of Interactive English exam.

TIE B2-C2 Exam Procedure

Written TIE Exam (WTIE)

Candidates are required to produce 2 texts, based on the material of their preparation.

  • Writing Task 1. A text based on their News Story.
  • Writing Task 2: A text based on their Book.

Total WTIE duration: 90 minutes

The use of a monolingual (English-English) dictionary is permitted (*not permitted in the TIE online version)

Spoken TIE Exam (OTIE)

Candidates are examined in groups of 2 (or 3 in the case of an odd number of candidates).

  • OTIE Duration for 2 candidates: 25 minutes
  • OTIE Duration for 3 candidates: 35 minutes

Using the Logbook in the TIE Exam

Candidates will use the Logbook in each part of the TIE B2-C2 Exam as follows:

Spoken Exam

  • Presentation & discussion of the Investigation by each candidate.
  • Presentation & discussion of one of the Book or News Story by each candidate.

Written Exam

  • Production of a text based on the Book preparation material.
  • Production of a text based on the News Story preparation material.

Clarifications

In the Spoken Exam, the candidate (except for the Investigation) does not choose which task (Book or News Story) he/she will be examined on and finds out on the day of the exam.

The Logbook is not assessed in terms of the structure and accuracy of the information it contains.

Candidates who do not have the Logbook with them on the day of the exam automatically receive a DNF (Did Not Fulfill Requirements) score.

Candidates with Additional Needs

The TIE – Test of Interactive English offers a specialised written examination procedure for candidates with additional needs.

For candidates with dyslexia, dysorthography, mobility problems, etc:

  • In the paper-based TIE Exam: candidates are entitled to an individual written examination with the assistance of a Gnosis Assessment scribe. In this procedure, the candidate answers the questions by dictating to the scribe, who records the candidate’s answers.
  • In the TIE online Exam: candidates are entitled to an additional 20 minutes in the Written Exam.
